In both younger and older adults, sage appears to improve memory and brain function ( 24, 25). Higher doses also elevated mood and increased alertness, calmness and contentedness ( 23). In healthy adults, sage was shown to improve memory in low doses. In one study, 39 participants with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease consumed either 60 drops (2 ml) of a sage extract supplement or a placebo daily for four months. Like the earlier catalogs of Hipparchus and Ptolemy, Ulugh Beg's catalogue is estimated to have been precise to within approximately 20 minutes of arc. In the 15th century, the Timurid astronomer Ulugh Beg compiled the Zij-i-Sultani, in which he catalogued 1,019 stars. His observations on eclipses were still used centuries later in Simon Newcomb's investigations on the motion of the Moon, while his other observations of the motions of the planets Jupiter and Saturn inspired Laplace's Obliquity of the Ecliptic and Inequalities of Jupiter and Saturn. Ibn Yunus observed more than 10,000 entries for the Sun's position for many years using a large astrolabe with a diameter of nearly 1.4 metres. In the 10th century, Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi carried out observations on the stars and described their positions, magnitudes and star color furthermore, he provided drawings for each constellation, which are depicted in his Book of Fixed Stars. Hipparchus's successor, Ptolemy, included a catalogue of 1,022 stars in his work the Almagest, giving their location, coordinates, and brightness. Hipparchus compiled a catalogue with at least 850 stars and their positions. In doing so, he also developed the brightness scale still in use today. This can be dated back to Hipparchus, who around 190 BC used the catalogue of his predecessors Timocharis and Aristillus to discover Earth's precession. Though it doesn’t appear to be warped from the outside, the grain always twists and curves. The sweet gum tree grows in a twisted and warped manner. Though it may be tempting to use one of these options because they are generally inexpensive, planks and solid pieces of wood should almost always be used for furniture crafting. It inevitably warps as the glue loosens.Pressboard should never be used for furniture because: It is made of hundreds of wood shavings (usually pine) pressed and glued together. The edges split easily, even if they are painted well.It easily warps if water or fluid is spilled on it.This style of lumber is not good for furniture carpentry for several reasons: Plywood is made with sheets of thin, low-quality lumber glued together. Most planks are versatile and can function well as a coffee tabletop. If your tabletop is too thin, then your table will easily be knocked over. Having thicker lumber makes the table heavier and more secure. This gives it added strength and helps you avoid these problems: Your Lumber Should Be an Inch Thickīe sure to get planks at least a full inch thick. The close grain of the lumber gives it a strong and durable quality that is perfect for crafting coffee tables and other central pieces of furniture.īirch is also straight grain, which makes cutting and working with it easier! So if you’re less experienced in carpentry, birch would be a good choice. This popular hardwood is strong, has a tight grain, and bright pale color. As a result, this process can make bamboo furniture less durable.īamboo itself is very strong, but when you buy planks, be sure that they are glued together securely. This means that individual pieces of bamboo have to be glued or fastened together to create a wider plank. The iPad version of AmpliTube is great and a major selling point for the iRig. I'm told that decisions are still being made on the future of an iPad version of the software, but I'd like to cast my vote in favor of it. The results are high quality and gig/studio-worthy, especially in combination with the noise filtering capabilities. I've plugged both bass and guitar into it, and I've played with sounds ranging from direct box to highly experimental (the Octopuss pedal has some insane settings). You can add backup tracks, or you can record your dry input to try with different setups.Īt this point, you're probably wondering how it sounds, right? It sounds awesome! Some of the effects obviously won't be everybody's cup of tea, but a little tweaking and a decent set of speakers or headphones, and you can pull off some amazing sounds. In addition to the metronome and tuner, the base application also allows in-app recording. It's all very intuitive, and settings are exactly where you'd expect them to be. Tap the dials on any pedal, and you get all of the options for that pedal. Within a setup, tapping the amp gives you all of the controls you'd find on a real head, and tapping the cabinet gives you control over the mic you're using. I had all of the additional gear available to me for the review, and I was hard pressed to find a sound I couldn't match with AmpLink. You can duplicate existing presets and save your edits, or you can build a new set from scratch. They make a great starting point for finding a sound, and the effects are easy to tweak individually. These range from Snappy Acoustic to Nu Metal Valve King, with plenty of blues, funk and decades of rock history between. Depending on the pedals you have in your arsenal, AmpKit will offer you preset combinations of amps and effects. Whereas the AmpliTube software limited you to three pedals and custom amp settings, you can have as many of the available pedals as you want in an AmpKit setup. Most pedals are around $3 and range up to $6.99. All of the additional gear can be purchased from within the app. Compared to buying the actual hardware to achieve these sounds, of course, it's a tidy savings. It looks like buying the AmpKit+ bundle saves you 50 percent off of buying the gear individually. AmpKit+ is available for $19.99, and includes four amps, two mics and, eight pedals. The free AmpKit app starts, of course, with a metronome and tuner, which are both well done, and it includes a dual-channel amp, two mics, and two pedals. The software on the iPhone is where the party really starts. The extra power gives you added volume on the output, as well as more advanced noise-canceling options.īy subscribing, you are agreeing to Engadget's Terms and Privacy Policy. Unlike the iRig, it requires two AA batteries, but after daily use for two weeks, I haven't killed the batteries that came with the unit. It gives you a quarter-inch line-in for your instrument, an eighth-inch output to go to headphones, mixer, speakers, etc., and it has an eighth-inch male jack to plug into your iPhone (no iPad app available yet, but the hardware works if you don't mind pixel-doubling the app). The hardware (US$39.99) is pretty simple. That being said, click "Read More" for my thoughts on the AmpKit/LiNK setup. I don't doubt that it would perform well on both counts, but I haven't battle-tested it. I'll tell you up front that I'm not currently gigging, so I can't attest to the road durability of this hardware, or the actual feasibility of using it onstage. I received a review unit of the AmpKit LiNK this month, though, and for the last couple of weeks, it's been the mainstay of my practice sessions. I pre-ordered the iRig, and I loved it from the moment I got it in the mail and plugged my guitar into it (I did unbox it first). Matt Tinsley recently reviewed the iRig and AmpliTube combination that also became available recently. It's loud, it's lightweight, and it's an extremely flexible (and relatively inexpensive) alternative to a floor full of pedals. Peavey and Agile Partners have just introduced AmpKit and AmpKit LiNK, an iPhone-based hardware/app combo that takes portable guitar and bass effects to a new level. |
